MASS MEDIA
Like to say that throughout the history people understood that knowledge is power. That’s why people have always been eager to learn. The main source of information for millions of people is mass media. Mass media includes newspapers and magazines, radio and television.
Newspapers and magazines are the oldest and most widespread of the mass media. There are different national and local papers, dailies, weeklies and monthlies. They satisfy different interests and tastes.
Many people still prefer the radio. It’s good to listen to the radio in a car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house. Listeners can tune into all kinds of stations: pop or classical music, news, sport or foreign radio stations. Besides, radio has fresher news than newspapers. They are informed every half hour.
Nobody will deny that television is the most popular type of mass media. It gives the opportunity to see the best actors, sport matches, to meet famous people. We learn about different countries, people and their customs, traditions, achievements and problems. We watch different talk-shows, TV-games, concerts, feature films and serials. At the end of my story I’d like to say that nowadays you can be informed even if you live in the Sahara desert.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Science is creating wonders almost every day. What was once fantasy is now a reality thanks to the recent achievements of scientists.
I think Electric engineering is the most powerful and exiting science nowadays. I am fond of electric engineering because it influences our lives and every day enters our flats. Picture-tube televisions have turned into LCDs  and Plasma. Computers have given away to laptops and notebooks. The mobiles have turned into a wonderful island of entertainment and communication. Internet has brought the impossible within means. Web has made online education possible through its territories. Cloning, space trips and robots are the miracles of the modern times. All these achievements are very important for us, especially for me, because I can’t live without my computer, MP3 and mobile.
The world knows the names of many great scientists: mathematicians, physicists, biologists, chemists, historians etc. As for me I think Newton was a really great scientist. He is considered the father of modern mathematics: he discovered the law of motion and the universal law of gravitation.
In conclusion I should say that our life is impossible without science and technology.

YOUTH AND SOCIETY

I think that the teenage years are the most wonderful years in our life. At this age we start a new adult life. We get more and more freedom. We can go to parties, discos, cafes, etc. We can have a lot of fun with our friends. We join together in a group to dance, read books, become members of youth organizations or representatives of subculture.
There are a lot of organizations, groups and movements, so young people can find a group or a movement that will suit their interests. The biggest youth organization in Belarus is the BRSM, which include 500,000 young people from 14 till 31. The main aim of this organization is to promote patriotism, involve young people in useful public activities.
Today many young people participate in exchange programmes organized either by schools or youth organizations.
Some young people set up environmental groups and join charity projects. I strongly believe that the initiative of young people should be supported by teachers, schools parents and other organizations.
It’s not easy for a teenager to find their own way of life still being involved in the social life of the country. At the end of my story I’d like to say that the real life is here in the family, in the country we live in.

11 КЛАСС, ЗАДАНИЕ НА 16.02

№ 1
  I.  1. Read the newspaper opinion column and say in 2—3 sentences what it is about.
Are you proud of being Belarusian?
I am Belarusian because my parents who gave me life and brought me up are Belarusian. And what if I were born in a different country on a different continent? In my opinion, a sense of pride in your country, a sense of belonging to a particular nation develops in a person with time. Therefore at my age, by the way I am 18, I can say quite positively, that I am proud to live in Belarus.
The real treasure of Belarus is its wonderful nature. The country has hundreds of wild forests, rolling hills, green valleys, sweetscented meadows and golden fields. Beloveshzkaya Pushcha is the only place where you can meet mighty European bison in the wild. Belarus is also famous for its clear lakes and ribbonlike rivers, that’s why it’s called a blueeyed one. The resorts of lakes Naroch and Braslav are open all year round and let tourists experience the unforgettable peaceful atmosphere.
I am proud of the rich heroic history of my country and its people. Although for many centuries we were part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania1, the PolishLithuanian Commonwelth2 and then the Russian Empire3 we have managed to stay united and haven’t lost our uniqueness. Many foreigners admit that our people are extremely sociable, hospitable, and generous and we are welcoming with visitors. We are also described as resourceful and peaceful. When socializing, Belarusians are open, warmhearted, funloving, humorous and outgoing in spite of all the difficulties they face in their life.
Of course I’m proud of our national holidays and traditions, especially those which are deeprooted and typical of our nation such as Kalyady, Maslenitsa, Dazhynki. They are unique and make us stand out. Besides, they are of particular interest for tourists because they reflect our culture.
In conclusion, I’d like to say that I’m proud of my country and its people. Each time I go abroad I tell foreigners about our great past and achievements. Each time I leave the country I want to come back again, because I miss it. If I were a talented painter, I would start drawing pictures with its beautiful landscapes; if I could compose verses, I would write lyric poems about it. Belarus is the place where my heart will always belong to!

UNESCO World Heritage1 List
Belarus joined UNESCO in 1954. For many years, Belarus has been building up fruitful and dynamic relations with international organizations. Belarus programme of UNESCO activities includes numerous interesting projects in the fields of education, science, information, communications, and, of course, culture. In October 1988, Belarus joined the Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Today four Belarusian sites have already been included into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In 1992, the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, a natural heritage object and a unique European forest reserve which has been protected since the 14th century, was the first one to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In 2000, the Mir Castle Complex, which was built at the beginning of the 16th century, was also added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The successful combination of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture2 makes Mir Castle one of Europe’s most impressive castles. In 2005, two more sites were included into the UNESCO World Heritage List. They are the Architectural, Residential and Cultural Complex of the Radziwills in Nesvizh and the Struve Geodetic Arc points3.
For centuries the Nesvizh Palace used to be the residence of the Radziwills, one of the richest families in Europe. Today the National Historical and Cultural MuseumReserve Nesvizh is a wonderfully restored castle, which is visited by hundreds of tourists from all parts of the world. No wonder, it has become a landmark of Belarus.
The Struve Arc is a world famous construction. The same sorts of points are in ten countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova, all together 265 points. According to the historical data, there were 31 geodesic points in Belarus, and only 19 survived.
Belarus is going to propose to add Independence Avenue in Minsk for inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Socialist Postwar Architecture in Central and Eastern Europe.

Fashion/Clothes

Clothes play an important role in our everyday life. People choose clothes according to their personal style. TV, music, magazines, our friends and even our parents influence our style. The style is like the language because it can say a lot about a person. There are many reasons for our manner ['mænə] of dressing: physical ['fɪzɪk(ə)l] attraction [ə'trækʃ(ə)n], emotions, religion, traditions.
For exapmle, at school we wear school uniforms. I think that everybody has the freedom to choose the clothes he/she likes, but we should be appropriately ([ə'prəuprɪətlɪ] соответствующе) dressed for any occasion ([ə'keɪʒ(ə)n] случай). School is a place where students get knowledge, it's not a playground. So, in general I like my school uniform, but when the school is over I wear my favourite clothes: jeans and sweaters. I'm sure casual clothes are more comfortable than formal clothes.
Some young people spend a lot of money to buy fashionable and expensive clothes, but I try to think twice before spending money on clothes. Besides, the world of fashion is always changing.
The clothes we wear tell a lot about us. I absolutely agree that "Style is knowing who you are and what you want to say" because "Fashions come and go, style is forever". Our clothes reflect our feelings and emotions. Today many people want to be fashionable, but it's better to remain true to yourself. The best thing is not to worry about your clothes, but just try to be an interesting person. Let it be your style.

Wales is a small country with a colourful history and beautiful landscapes, including 3 National Parks. Wales is also known as 'the land of castles', it is home to 641 famous fortresses - more castles per square mile than anywhere else in the world. Wales is also home to 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and although Cardiff, the capital city, dates back to Roman times, it's actually Britain's youngest city!
